Dog has diarrhea for 3 days, what will help her get back to normal?
Dog is a 15 yo pit bull/ black lab mix. She used to eat Lamb and Rice formula dry food but hasn’t touched it in almost a week. Yesterday we changed to Adult formula IAMS canned lamb and rice and she started eating again, but she has the runs. She is getting thinner and I don’t want her to get dehydrated.
She is drinking more water than she used to before the problems started, and she does still urinate. Since switching to canned food, she’s perked up alot and after tugging on her fur, it bounces back to normal. We will take her to the vet asap. Thank you all for your help.
first of all 15 is up there, have you had senior bloodwork done lately? i would highly recommend it at her age, i have a 10yr old pit. as far as the diarrhea, changing the foods fast like that without mixing it for 7-10 days is a definite for the runs. plus canned food is filled with water. you need to switch slowwwwwwwly. yes she could be dehydrated, pick up the skin at the back of her neck, if it springs right back down , shes ok, if it stays up or goes down slowly shes entering dehydration. its more important for her to be hydrated than to eat. dogs can fast for many days and wont hurt them, but not having adequate fluid intake can cause organs to shut down. i would make a vet visit, get her on some meds for diarrhea, like metronidazole and let them asses her.
