Top 10 Emergency Preparedness Resolutions
The New Year brings a lot of reasons to reflect and to plan. It’s also a time for many to establish a new set of resolutions, many of which may be short-lived and have minimal overall impact.
Well, here’s one that we suggest which makes your list and will have an impact that you will feel very good about. Along with the standard, often less than successful resolutions (exercise more, skip dessert and get more sleep), include buy or build an emergency pack. Or if you really want to feel good about this resolution buy or build more than one. After all the decision to get one for the house/for the family can very easily be extended to one for the car(s), for the office, for a friend, relative, etc.
All it takes is a little thought, a little planning and maybe a trip to the Internet, the store, the pantry, or a combination of all of these.
Here are a few tips to get you going – think of this as your top 10 list for preparedness
1) Every geographical area has its own unique set of specific emergencies to be concerned about but many can be common to everyone like – power outages, car related emergencies, fires, storms, etc. Add to these natural disasters (hurricanes, earthquakes, snow storms) and personal emergencies; assume that you’ll prepare for them all.
2) Government agencies will respond to community disasters, but citizens may be on their own for three days or more. In some emergencies, such as with an influenza outbreak prepare for a week or more to be self-sufficient.
3) Before a disaster strikes choose a place for your family to meet after a disaster. Choose a contact person outside of the state for family members to contact in case you get separated.
4) Focus on the needs of your immediate family. Know how to contact your children at their school or daycare, and how to pick them up after a disaster.
5) Put together an emergency supply pack for your home, car and workplace. If your child’s school or daycare stores personal emergency packs, make one for your child to keep there.
6) If your family members who don’t speak English, prepare emergency cards in English with their names, addresses and information about medications or allergies.
7) Make copies of your vital records and store them in a safe deposit box or out of state. Take photos and videotapes of your home and personal items. Store in a safe place.
8) Before a disaster strikes be sure your vehicle is in good operating order and have an emergency supply kit in your car. Have emergency food and avoid food that makes you thirsty. Store gloves, extra glasses, medication, money, and food for infants and others with special needs.
9) One gallon of water per person per day is recommended. Store water in large soft-drink containers. Avoid containers that will break down such as milk cartons and glass bottles.
